Devika Bhagat Biography

Devika Bhagat is a young screenwriter turned director associated with Bollywood. After writing the scripts of popular movies like Manorama Six Feet Under (2007), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (2011), Jab Tak hai Jaan (2012) etc she turned director with the film - One by Two in 2014, and the movie starred Abhay Deol in lead role. Aisha and I, Me aur Main are other noted works as a screenwriter. She also scripted the TV Series, Mahi Way for Sony television Network.

Devika Bhagat was born on October 25, 1979 in New Delhi. After schooling at Delhi and US, she completed her BFA degree in Film and Television Production from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. In 2001 she worked as intern for Monsoon Wedding directed by Mira Nair. It’s her first foray to the professional world of cinema. After that she has worked as a script and dialogue writer and also assistant director, before her debut as an independent film director in Bollywood.

She started her career as an assistant director with 2003 movie, Dreaming Lhasa, a Tibetan language film followed by The Bourne Supremacy in 2004 and In Othello in 2005. After her experience in these foreign language films, she moved to Bollywood. She wrote the story of Manorama Six Feet Under (2007) and co-scripted it aside Navdeep Singh, marking her debut in Bollywood. The movie starred Abhay Deol in lead role and when she made her directorial debut with One by Two in 2014, she casted the same actor in lead hero role. Critics appreciated the film and especially excellent written dialogues, though the movie was a commercial failure.

After her debut film, though she thought of working with small budget films, she got opportunity to work for big banners like Yash Raj Films and those movies clicked at box office as well.
