Deepak Haldankar Biography

Deepak Haldankar is a film director and cinematographer from Dharwad, Karnataka. He also worked as a still photographer for Doordarshan and Film Division. This acclaimed artist is credited to be the first Indian Director Cinematographer to shoot 35mm Eastmancolor films in Antarctica, and the film titled "Exploration Antarctica" (1987) was showcased at different film festivals and won accolades. He has also worked as a still photographer for Films Division, Government of India for documenting many of their documentary works such as "The Flying Sikh -Milkha Singh", "Arming the Mountains" etc.

 

Haldankar was born on 17 December 1947 at Dharwad, Karnataka State. He was brought up in Mumbai. As a professional, he started off as a still photographer working with Films Division, Government of India in the year 1970. He also worked with Doordarshan for many years, documenting and photographing various projects. He worked with directors like S. P. Ganguli and Chandramani Kohli during his early days. "Gift of Love" a film on dowry deaths directed by Meera Dewan for Films Division was one of his major works, which won many awards. Many of his photographs are iconic and became a part of Indian history.

 

In films, he started off as an assistant under Nariman A. Irani, best known as the producer of film, Don. Later Haldankar worked with different cinematographers of Indian film industry. He photographed five episodes of Kab Tak for TV India, apart from many works for television, including regional languages. He worked for Telugu serials such as Talli Prema, Saraswati Namasthubyam, Friends etc for Abhinav Arts. He has also worked with production house Harikrit Films, New Delhi as Chief Strategist.
