Deedi Damodaran Biography

Deedi Damodaran is a young screenwriter associated with Malayalam cinema. She is the daughter of the veteran screen writer of Malayalam cinema T. Damodaran, best known for writing some of the best scripts of I. V. Sasi in the 1980s and Priyadarshan in the 1990s. Following her father’s footsteps, she joined film industry in 2008 with the movie, Gulmohar, followed by the segment Makal in the anthology Kerala kafe (2009) and Nayika (2011), inspired from true elements. She is credited to be the first woman script writer in Malayalam cinema.

Deedi was born to acclaimed screenwriter T. Damodaran and his wife, Pushpa. She has two sisters, Simna and Reshmi. Her husband Premchand is a journalist. Her life took a turning point when she was preparing her doctoral thesis – ‘Film and female.' She realized that none of the reel women seem to have anything to do with real women, and the only way to rectify it is to write screenplays. Gulmohar was her first movie as a screenwriter, and the movie was helmed by acclaimed director Jayraj. Later she wrote Makal segment for Kerala kafe (2009) and Nayika (2011). Nayika was her first scripted her, though it was made to a film later.

Deedi is a movie buff who watches all Malayalam movies on first day first show, and her husband also joins her. It has become a habit for the past two decades or so. She is perhaps the only woman scribe to have covered eight International Film Festivals of India. Cinema is already in her blood as she is the eldest daughter of ace screenwriter T. Damodaran. At the age of 12, she assisted her father to write the script of the movie, Ee Naadu.
