Debu Deodhar Biography

Debu Deodhar was a veteran cinematographer associated with Indian film industry. Associated with film industry since 1972, he predominantly worked in Marathi cinema. Multiple award winning films - Kairee (1999) and Daayraa (1996) are among his major works. He was married to National award winning film director of 1990s, Shrabani Deodhar. They together have worked in many films. Their daughter Sai Deodhar is a successful actress associated with Hindi television industry. Sai is married to popular TV actor, Shakti Anand.

He was born in Pune in 1948. He graduated from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, Pune before joining the film industry in the early 1970s. He started his career as an assistant cameraman in 1972 and has later worked as an independent cinematographer for more than 25 films. His career spanned to about four decades till his death in 2010 aged 62. He died of lung disorder and cancer at his residence in Mumbai.

He married Shrabani Deodhar in 1981. Shrabani’s parents were doctors and she didn’t own any knowledge in film making. After her marriage she got opportunity to learn more about films and film making. Persuaded by her husband, she joined appreciation courses at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Her husband also assisted her for her maiden project, Lapandav (1993) which won National award for best film in Marathi language. Since then Debu assisted her as a cinematographer for all her films till his death in 2010.

He worked as Shrabani Deodhar’s cinematographer for her Bollywood ventures - Pehchaan: The Face of Truth in 2005 and Silsila Hai Pyar Ka in 1999. Both the movies were commercial failures. He also did the camera work of Hindi film, Thodasa Roomani Ho Jaayen directed by Amol Palekar. He has been frequently associated with Amol Palekar for many Marathi projects.
