Debaki Bose Biography

Debaki Bose also known as Debaki Kumar Bose was a talented film maker of Bengali cinema. He has remained as one of the top directors of yesterdays. He is known for his innovative use of sound and music in Indian Cinema. He started his own production company, Debaki Productions, in 1945. Apart from a film director, he has been an actor and screenwriter also. First time, background score was introduced to Indian cinema through Bose’ movie Chandidas, released in 1932. Seeta made under the banner of East India Film Company in the year 1934 was the first Indian talkie shown in any international film festival. It was the first Indian talkie shown in Venice Film festival. In 1953, his movie Bhagavan Sri Krishna Chaitanya won National award for best feature film. He has received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma shree.

Debaki Bose was born in 1898 in Burdwan, Bengal. His father was a successful advocate in Burdwan. Debaki got inspired by Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement and walked out of an examination. Then he started his life his own. He started a local shop to sell towels during that time. During this time he edited Shakti – a local weekly. Once Dhiren Ganguly, a noted film director happened to visit Burdwan and came to know about the writing capabilities of Bose. Thus he hired him to write script for his films. Thus his first project was the first film made by British Dominion Films named Kamonar Agun.

Later he entered direction field through Panchasar (1930) and till regarded as one of the foremost directors of Indian screen. A few of his early movies include - Shadows of the Dead (1931), Aparadhi (1931), Nishir Dak (1932), Rajrani Meera (1933), Meerabai (1933), Seeta (1934), Inquilab (1935) and many more. He has also appeared in a few movies like Panchasar (1930) and Charitraheen (1931) as an actor.
