Daljeet Kaur Biography

Daljeet Kaur is a veteran actress of Punjabi cinema, often referred to as ‘Hema Malini of Punjabi Cinema’. She remained one of the most sought actresses of Punjabi cinema during 1975-1995, before she moved to mother kind of roles, and she played a magnificent role in bringing family audiences to theatre in the 1980s and popularizing Punjabi cinema as well. She owns dozens and dozens of Punjabi hits, apart from doing Bollywood, Malayalam and other language films. Her contribution to Punjabi cinema is immensely huge. She also earned numerous film awards. Now she has lost her memory, and not appearing in public. She lost her husband in an accident years back, and has no children.

 

Daljeet Kaur hails from Aitiana near Sudhar in the district Ludhiana, Punjab. She was raised in Siliguri of West Bengal, and visited her hometown during holidays and vacation. A convent school student, Daljeet was good in studies, sports as well as arts. She studied at Pune Film Institute, and appeared in a short film, 'Bonga' directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Since college days she was praised for her natural looks, and after she joined film industry, she got the likes of top stars like Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt etc.

 

She was to play lead roles in Bollywood movies like Khudrat, Henna, Aakhiri Mughal etc. But when the movies got delayed, she started accepting Punjabi films and went on to become a highly popular actress. She reached her career peak in the 1980s, and her pairing with top star Veerendra got appreciated. Unfortunately when her roles in promised projects such as Khudrat got replaced, a few got shelved and then she accepted projects from all languages. She played lead or supporting roles in Bollywood films like Intka Jawab Patthar, Videsh, Jeene Nahi Doonga, Faasle, Amrit, Paanch Qaidi, Yaari Dushmani etc.

 

Initially, she was reluctant to do a Punjabi film, but accepted the movie, 'Daaj' opposite Daj Kumar. The film went on to become a big hit and she got many offers for Punjabi films but still she wanted to make it big in Hindi films. She did a cameo in another Punjabi film titled 'Giddha', just because Dharmendra was opposite her. Her Punjabi film 'Saidan Jogan' turned a jubilee hit. Putt Jattan De, Roop Shaqinan Da, Ishq Nimana,Mamla Garbarh Hai, Laajo, Batwara, Vairee Jatt, Patola, Ki Banoo Duniya Da, Sohni Mahiwa etc are a few more hits.
