Chinmoy Roy Biography

Chinmoy Roy is a noted character artist of Bengali cinema, who excelled in comic roles. A flexible actor, he has also handled different genres of character roles, apart from comedy, thus regarded as a versatile actor. He is best known for portraying the famous fictional character Tenida on screen. Basanto Bilap, Dhonni Meye, and Nanigopaler Biye are his noted roles as a comedy actor and he played a small role in Satyajit Ray's classic comedy - Goopy Gyne o Bagha Byne (1968), where he was seen as a spy working for the Minister of Halla. It was one of his early works and he became quite active in the film scene throughout 1970s and 1980s.

 

Though he is suffering from chronic health problems, he is working on a few film scripts with director Rajib Ball. He was last seen in the film - Sudama the Half Man, directed by the same director. It was his first film with Indo-Aussie Film Director Rajib Ball. Earlier he had taken a break from film industry in the 1990s. He has worked with many leading directors like Tapan Sinha, Ajit Ganguly, Sushil Mukherjee, Tarun Majumdar, Robi Ghosh, Ramprasad Chakraborty etc.

 

Chinmoy was born in Comilla of British India, now a part of Bangladesh. He entered Bengali cinema in the late 1960s doing bit roles. Galpo Holeo Satti in 1966 was his first credited work. The movie was directed by renowned director Tapan Sinha. It was followed by Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, his first film role for Satyajit Ray’s films. With the early 1970s he got frequently associated with Bengali cinema. Most of his memorable roles belong to movies directed by Ajit Ganguly, beginning with Rupasi in 1970, followed by Janani, Natun Diner Alo etc.

 

Chinmoy Roy was born on January 16, 1940. He completed graduation with honours. Yet his passion to films prompted him to leave his job in Delhi and pursue a career in entertainment industry. After a brief stint in theatre, Galpo Holeo Satti in 1966 marked his film debut. "Ekhony" was one of his major breakthroughs which earned him a BFJA Award.
