Buddhadeb Dasgupta Biography

Buddhadeb Dasgupta is a film maker from Bengal. He is a popular poet also. As a director, he has won National Film Award for Best Direction twice, for Uttara (2000) and Swapner Din (2005). His popular works as a poet include - Govir Araley, Coffin Kimba Suitcase, Himjog, Chhaata Kahini, Roboter Gaan, Sreshtha Kabita and Bhomboler Ascharya Kahini O Ananya Kabita. His movies, Bagh Bahadur (1989), Charachar (1993), Lal Darja (1997), Mondo Meyer Upakhyan (2002) and Kaalpurush (2008) have won National awards for best feature films. Not only that, two of his movies - Dooratwa (1978) and Tahader Katha (1993) have won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali.

 

Buddhadeb Dasgupta was born in 1944, in Anara, West Bengal. His father Tarkanta Dasgupta was a doctor of Indian Railway. Thus childhood days of Dasgupta were spent in travelling. He did his schooling at Dinabandhu School, Howrah. After Indian Independence, the family got transferred to Chhattisgarh. He studied economics at the prestigious Scottish Church College and at the University of Calcutta. He took membership from Calcutta Film Society. It exposed him literal learning to many great director’s works of world cinema worldwide.

 

Dasgupta started his career as an Economics lecturer at Shyamsundar College of the University of Burdwan. Later he worked as a teacher at City College, Calcutta. He started his film career with a 10-minute documentary in 1968, The Continent of Love. In 1976, he left the job and joined film industry as full time assignment. His first feature film as a director was released two years later in 1978 – Dooratwa. He was inspired by Satyajit Ray's realistic films during his initial stage in films though he moved to other subjects later. His most noted works include - Bagh Bahadur, Tahader Katha, Mondo Meyer Upakhyan, Charachar and Uttara.
