Brij Sadanah Biography

Brij Sadanah was a film producer and director associated with Bollywood yesterdays. He contributed many successful films to Bollywood - Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi, Ustadon Ke Ustad, Night in London, Thakdeer, Oonje Log, Victoria No. 203, Yakeen, Do Bhai, Professor Pyarelal etc. He was married to small time actress of 1960s - Sayeeda Khan, daughter of Anwari Begum, an actress of yesterdays. The couple had two children of whom actor and director Kamal Sadanah is their son. On October 21st, 1990 on the 20th birthday of Kamal Sadanah, Brij Sadanah shot all his family members following an argument with his wife and later killed himself. Kamal Sadanah was the only survivor.

Sayeeda and daughter Namrata were severely injured and died on the way to hospital. Kamal, who was shot on his neck survived. Kamal witnessed his mother being shot. Later he acted in a few movies and turned director. He was the lead hero of Kajol’s first film – Bekhudi.  20 years later made a short film on the unfortunate incident and named it A Moment of Pause. Prem Chopra enacted the role of Brij Sadanah in the film. Brij Sadanah shot his family members using a licensed gun following an argument with his wife for a third person, which Kamal Sadanah – the only witness doesn’t want to disclose. Brij Sadanah who was alone at the residence shot himself, after all the family members were rushed to the hospital.

Brij Sadanah was born on 6 October 1933 into a Hindi family in Gujranwala of Punjab, present day Pakistan. Started his career in the late 1950s, Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi, Ustadon Ke Ustad, Night in London etc were some of his big hits in the era of romantic 1960s. Sau Baar Janam of Ustadon Ke Ustad, Oh My love and Bahoshon Hawas Mein Deewana of Night in London etc are among the evergreen songs of his movies. He has worked with all leading actors of Bollywood – Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Shakila, Pradeep Kumar, Biswajeet, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Mala Sinha, Johnny Walker, Helen etc.
