Bipin Gupta Biography

Bipin Gupta was a Bollywood actor-turned-producer who regularly appeared in movies of 1950s and 1960s in father type of roles. He mostly played rich businessman type of character roles on screen. Amrapali, Khilona, Jeevan mrithyu, Gharana, Grahasthi, Hamrahi, Baat ek raat ki, Jagriti, Majhli Didi, Raja aur Runk, Baiju bawra and Sasural are some of his memorable roles. He passed away in Kolkata on September 9, 1981 aged 76.

 

He has also produced one ‘Dal Mein Kala’ (1964) for which Kishore Kumar helped him by giving Rs. 20000, which was a huge amount in those days. Kishore is known for "no money, no work" principle in those days. Yet he helped Bipin. The movie also starred Nimmi and Abhi Bhattacharya, and Kishore himself. As an actor he has appeared in about three hundred films and Gharana (1961), Jagriti (1954) and Mamta (1966) are his best known works. He played villain’s role in Baat ek raat ki.

 

He was born on 21 August 1905 in Meerut to a Bengali family. Later the family shifted to Barrackpore where he completed his school studies. Then he reached Mumbai with dreams to enter film world. He didn’t complete his formal education. He did a few odd jobs in Mumbai and also got opportunity to do some bit roles in films in the 1930s. Once when the lead actor turned down the role, the producers impressed by his good looks and voice quality offered him the role.  Chokher Bali in 1938 was his first Bengali movie. Despite working in more than 300 movies in character roles, he played lead hero in only one Hindi movie – Noori.
