Biju Viswanath Biography

Biju Viswanath is an award winning filmmaker and screenwriter from Kerala. He is also known as Director of Photography. He has made films in many Indian and foreign languages and his movies are shown in many countries and received awards and appreciations as well. His production house is based in Florence and New York, US. He made his directorial debut through the short film ‘A Voyage’ – based on a work on famous Malayalam novelist and screenwriter, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, which won the Gold Medal for Best Short Film in India and Honorable Mention in Zanzibar International Film Festival. His English film – Dejavu was premiered at the 54th Locarno International Film Festival, only the second Indian movie after Lagan to premier at Locarno. This movie with English actors was screened in 24 international film festivals.

 

He has made movies in Tamil, English, Irish, Swahili, Japanese, Italian and many other languages. Though several filmmakers from Kerala have succeeded in winning international awards, only a few from Kerala have been able to succeed in making international films and Biju is one such filmmaker. His feature film Viola received the “Golden palm” award in the 2011 Mexico international film festival. Marathon (2010) has also received two international awards. He is one among those directors of international acclaim who never compromise with the quality of his film. He is one among the few filmmakers from Kerala to hit the international film circuit and he never feels that language is a barrier and he experiments with multiple genres of movie making.

 

"Orange Mittai" is his upcoming Tamil project which stars Ramesh Thilak in the lead role. He has done only 7 feature films till now. Yet most of them have earned international acclamation. His father Cheri Viswanath was a screenwriter and he used to accompany his father in film sets in his younger days.  He also appeared as a child artist in the movie Dheerasamere Yamunathere. He belongs to Thiruvananthapuram. He has directed one film in Malayalam and has done camera work for Mammootty starrer Phantom and Tamil film, Poi.
