Bela Bose Biography

Bela Bose was a noted Bollywood actress during 1950s and 1960s. She is mostly known for supporting and character roles and many of those movies, she has expressed her talents of a dancer. She has been a contemporary to dancers of Bollywood – Helen, Aruna Irani and Laxmi Chhaya and has also appeared with them in quite a few movies. In fact she has danced aside legendary item girl of Bollywood for movies like Main Albeli Pyar Jata Kar from Shikar (1968), “Deep Jale Dekho” from Dil Daulat Duniya (1972) and  “Hai Nazar Ka Ishara” from Anita (1967). She played Helen’s sister’s role in 1962 film – Hawa mahal. She has also been associated with Bengali theatre.

 

Bele was a school student when she joined a dance troupe to financially support her family. It was soon after her father’s death when she was a young girl. After school studies, she accepted brief roles in movies and in most of them she appeared in less significant roles and dance sequences. Very soon she became one of the popular item dancers of 1960s. The period between 1961 and 1966 was the best one of Bela and she appeared as a glamorous doll or dancer in most of these movies.

 

As an actress the mega blockbuster Jai Santoshi Maa (1975) is the most meaty role she played. She played the negative character ‘Durga’ in this movie. She worked with her real life husband Ashish Kumar in this movie. The tribal woman in 1968 super hit – Shikari and Bandini (1963) are other memorable roles. Dil Aur Mohabbat, Zindagi Aur Maut and Jeene Ki Raah also need special mention.
