Avijit Dutt Biography

Avijit Dutt is a film director and theatre personality from Delhi. He is also an actor and communications consultant. Also associated with social work, he launched the Child line with UNICEF & National Human Rights Commission. He marked his acting career in films with 1996 controversial film of Deepa Mehta, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love where he portrayed the supporting role of Vazir, The King's Prime Minister. He later appeared in Deepa Mehta’s Fire. Gandhi to Hitler, Peepli Live, Amu, No One Killed Jessica, Madras Café, Piku, Jolly LLB 2, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Bong Connection, Bow Barracks Forever etc are a few more Hindi films where he essayed supporting roles.

 

Avijit Dutt hails from the capital city of Delhi. He is based in Delhi since the beginning of his professional career with theatre. An acclaimed theatre director and actor, he has done over 75 plays in English, Hindi & Bengali languages. He is mostly associated with theatre though he has received numerous offers from Bollywood film industry. He has scripted some plays - Bamboo Flower, Mahatma Mar Gaya, Bombay! Bosnia!, Breaking News, Noor Jahan- An Empress Reveals ,Unspeakable , 9.45 ki Express ki Citee etc. He also co-directed the play, 1084 ki Ma, along with Shyamanand Jalan.

 

Through his debut role as Vazir, The King's Prime Minister in 1996 film, Kamasutra he came to limelight. He played some of the memorable roles in Bollywood box office hits in the recent times. He played R&AW officer in highly acclaimed Madras Café. His roles as a defense lawyer in No One Killed Jessica and state police head in Jolly LLB2 also got noticed.
