Anwar Ali (poet) Biography

Anwar Ali is an Indian poet belonging to Malayalam literature. He is also known as lyricist, translator, and documentary filmmaker. A cine personality too, this poet contributes lyrics to Malayalam movies. Many of his poems and poetic study works have been published in different forms of Malayalam publications since 1984. As a poet he came to prominence after the publishing of his poetry collections titled Mazhakkalam in 1999. Many of his poetry works have been translated to other Indian and foreign languages. He penned lyrics for some of the popular songs in the recent times, which include songs of Annayum Rasoolum, Kismath, Kammattippaadam, Eada, Njaan Steve Lopez, Maayanadi, Sudani From Nigeria etc.

Anwar Ali hails from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was born on 1 July 1966. Apart from his career as a writer related to poetry, he is also a documentary filmmaker. His debut documentary was based on the life history of Attoor Ravi Varma, which got selected for IDSFFK,2015, MIFF,2016 Mumbai International Film Festival and SIGNS Festival,2015. He co-wrote the script of Malayalam movie Margam in 2003, which won Kerala state film award for best screenplay. He has also directed many documentary films for Malayalam Doordarshan channel. Many of his documentary films have been showcased in international film festivals in India and abroad. He also wrote a number of scripts for C Dit documentaries.

Atiyaati Alanja marangale (2009), Eternal Sculptures - Poetry Collection in English (2007), and, I Rappai, Novella are among his published poetry collections. He has also done a few translation works to Malayalam, and Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window (English) and Oru Gramathile Nadi (Tamil) are among those. He co-translated this Tamil work with Abdul Jaleel. He has also translated poetry works from African and Indian languages such as Hindi, Kannada, and Assamese into Malayalam.
