Anjan Dutt Biography

Anjan Dutt is a popular actor, lyricist and singer from Bengal. He belongs to the music scene defined by the name, anyodharar gaan during 1990’s. His tunes are simple, yet make us remember western folk tunes. His simple and natural songs are also popular. He is the first Bengali artist to popularize western musical instrument, saxophone in Bengali songs. He is a great fan of Bob Dylan and Kabir Suman. Anjan is a successful actor too. Anjan started his career in cinema as an actor and he is a popular actor too. Anjan is listed among the group of serious actors of Indian cinema and shares an elite position in the list of the best. Mr and Mrs Iyer is one of his memorable roles in the recent times.

 

Anjan was born on January 19, 1953 in Kolkata. He was raised in the mountains of North Bengal. He had his schooling from St. Paul's School, Darjeeling. Though Anjan did not get much opportunity to listen to traditional Bengali songs, he was exposed to western folk and country music around that time. His father wanted him to pursue a career in law while young Anjan thought of joining theatre. His friends too inspired him a lot. He earned MA in English literature from the University of Calcutta. In those days, he started working in theaters with Badal Sarkar.

 

In late seventies, he joined a group called 'Open Theatre' and during 1980’s he performed in many translation works. Unexpectedly he got an opportunity to work in a Bengali movie, 'Chalachitro' directed by Mrinal Sen. The movie was shown in Venice Film Festival and his role got critical appreciation. He won the prize for the best newcomer actor also. He started his music career by translating English songs. When he got an offer from HMV to publish his songs, he took music career seriously.
