Anita Majumdar Biography

Anita Majumdar is an award winning actress, dancer and playwright of Indian origin. Mostly associated with Canadian movies and television, she acted in Mira Nair’s controversial movie, Midnight's Children, a Canadian-British film adaptation of Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel of the same name. She portrayed the supporting role of Emerald in the movie, which earned numerous awards at various film festivals. She is best known for the television film, Murder Unveiled (2005) for which she received the Best Actress award at the Asian Festival of First Films. She played the role of Davinder Samra which was based on the true story of the Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu murder.

 

Anita is of Bengali origin. She was born to Hindu Bengali immigrants in Port Moody, Canada. She was brought up in Canada, but based on Indian culture. She learnt Indian classical dance forms like Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Odissi. She graduated in English, Theatre and South Asian Languages and finally National Theatre School of Canada in the year 2004. Since then she is active with theater plays and television roles. Associated with stage plays, she got acclamation and recognition for the first time through the one-act play, Fish Eyes in which she played three different parts.

 

In 2005, she shot to fame after playing the female lead in the television film, Murder Unveiled. It was adaptation on a real love story of a Canadian girl & her honour killing. Diverted, Republic of Doyle, Midnight's Children and Gavin Crawford's Wild West are the other major films she got associated with. Bombay Black, The Misfit, Same Same But Different, Ali & Ali: The Deportation Hearings, Rice Boy, Tales from Ovid and Shakuntala are some of the theatre plays she got associated with.
