Amrita Singh Biography

Amrita Singh is a former actress of Bollywood during 1980’s. She is successful as a television actress too. She debut Bollywood along with Sunny Deol in the movie ‘Betaab’ in the year 1983 and the movie proved successful too. Her other successful movies include Sunny, Raju ban gaya gentleman, Chameli ki shaadi, Khudgarz, Kalyug, Aina, Sahib, Mard and 23 March 1921: Shaheed. Her role in the negative shades of the movie Raju ban gaya gentleman, Aina and Kalyug were well appreciated and she won Filmfare supporting actress for Raju ban gaya gentleman. Earlier she was married to Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan who was 12 years younger to her and they divorced in the year 2004, soon after the first success of Saif Ali khan’s solo movie ‘Hum Tum’. It was also rumoured that time that he left her when he became a star in Bollywood.

She was born to Sikh-Muslim family in Punjab. She attended Model school in Delhi and can fluently speak English, Punjabi and Hindi. She debut Bollywood with Betaab and this movie was one among the best movies of 1983. Fresh pairing of Sunny Deol and Amrita, its songs as well as teenage love story of opposition from family, appealed masses. Duet songs composed by R.D.Burman like ‘Jab hum jawa honge’ and ‘Badal yun barstha hai’ became great hits. Following the success of Betaab, the movie ‘Sunny’ was released. This movie is remembered for the nce compositions like ‘Jaane kya baat hai’ pictured on Amrita; she acted as a singer in that movie. Then she got a huge project opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Mard which was a blockbuster. Then luck hit her doorsteps in the role of big movies of 80’s like Chameli ki shaadi, Duniya, Agnee, Saheb, Naam, Waaris, Mera dharma, Chameli ki shaadi and Khudgarz. Though the pairing of Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh was noted most, she was also successfully paired with Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan.  

She did a few roles in 1990’s for movies like Akayla and Dil aashna hai. After her marriage in 1991, she retired from movies forever. But after her divorce in 2003,  she has come back with movies in supporting roles like Kal yug, Shaheed, Dus Kahaniyam and Shoot out at Lokhandwala.
