Amit Dutta Biography

Amit Dutta is an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter who loves to experiment with his themes and projects. He is considered to be one of the most significant contemporary practitioners of experimental cinema. Art history, ethno-anthropology and cultural inheritance are the common subjects he explore through the medium of cinema and is successful in his attempts too. He often does researches and documentation as a part of film making.

Amit Dutta graduated from FTII, Pune in 2004. He began his career with several short experimental films. It included the subjects of historical remains, fairytales and children’s stories also. Kramasha (To Be Continued), an experimental short film made in 2007, gained him quick attention. It won many national and international awards and was included in the list of thousand best films of all times compiled by film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum. In 2007, it received FIPRESCI Jury award and Golden Conch for the Best Film of the Festival in 2008 as well. This short film explored the relationship between personal mythology, literary text, and the cinematic image. ‘The Man’s Woman and Other Stories’ (2009) and Sonchidi - ‘The Golden Bird’ (2011) are other noted works.

‘The Man’s Woman and Other Stories’ is a collection of three separate short-stories which received the Jury’s Special Mention award of the Orizzonti section of Venice Film Festival 2010. Sonchidi was also screened at several international film festivals including Rotterdam film festival. In 2007 he collaborated with the art historian Dr Eberhard Fischer and later produced many works on his researches. His major work after this collaboration was the feature film ‘Nainsukh’ in 2010. It was creened at several international film festivals like Vancouver Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and San Francisco Film Festival. Ramkhind and ‘The Museum of Imagination, A Portrait in absentia’ are other noted works.
