Alphonse Putharen Biography

Alphonse Putharen is a South Indian film director who came to the limelight after the bilingual movie – Neram, released at the same time in Tamil and Malayalam. It was his debut movie as a director, which earned both critical and commercial success for excellent direction and unpredicted moments. The movie released in 2013 marked the Tamil debut of two young actors of Malayalam - Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim.

Alphonse Putharen was born in Aluva on 10 February 1984. His schooling was completed at various schools including Mount Tabor School Kalamassery, Lawrence School Lovedale, Rajagiri School Kalamassery and St. Aloysius High School Paravur. His higer secondary education was completed at Amritha Vidhyalayam. After taking Bachelor’s degree in computer science from M. E. S. College, Aluva, he reached Chennai where he took a Diploma in Filmmaking from S. A. E. College. At the same time, he started shooting music videos and short films.  Arkan and Suttrum Vizhi are his earliest short films that he made while studying at Chennai. After college life, he made short films titled – Cling cling and Neram and music video ‘Flavours’ which used stop motion technique.

Actor Vijay Sethupathi has worked in his short films – Neram and The Angel. Then Putharen directed the Malayalam music videos Dhaaham for Rajesh Murugesan and Nenjodu Cherthu from the album Yuvvh. The music video Nenjodu Cherthu starring Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim became hugely popular and he experimented with the same pair for his debut bilingual movie – Neram. Eli - a sexy tale with Nivin in lead role was another noted work. For his debut feature film Neram, except the leading pair and main villain Bobby Simha, he used different actors to shoot both its versions.
