A Blogger's Views On Erode Book Fair - 2012

I went to Erode Book Fair with two motives, one is to take a look at the stalls simply and the other one I will tell you at the end of this article. Erode Book Fair has been conducted every year in Erode by Makkal Chinthanai Peravai to encourage the habit of reading. This is the 8th successful year in their endeavor.

I went inside the exhibit to see two rows full of bookstalls. There were more than 400 such stalls of various publishers. I am not very interested in reading but I am always very interested in learning. So, only educative especially technical related books attract me always. I wanted to take a quick tour of everything as we had very less time. There were not much crowd there proclaiming that people had lost interest in reading. Indeed, internet and e-books have overtaken the printed books.

My daughter was into bookstalls that sell science books and my son into the coloring section and comics section. They are interested in the books of their age and I was getting restless with their frequent stops. I was searching for something continuously. The long line of stalls appeared never ending. The book fair had more than one entrance and everyday they change the entrance and exit so that every bookshop should be benefitted and we were from its tail end towards its head and so the shop numbers were decreasing as we passed on.

One book caught my attention because of the name. The name of the book is ‘Please do not buy this book’ in Tamil language. This will surely make anyone take an interest to buy that book or at least take a look at it. How tactfully people think? It was written by the television anchor Gopinath. I understood that this was something related to self-motivation. I usually do not go for such writings as I believe I have enough of it already. So I just clicked it for its different name and passed by.

I have a mini but unused library in my home. As no one at my home turns to that in this internet era, I have no interest in adding value to that by dumping it with new books. There were some shops there that were selling DVDs. I popped into such a shop and came out with a DVD that had lessons on Web Designing Basics costing Rs.200. Though all shops in the book fair offer 10% discount on the books sold, no such discounts were given for the CDs and DVDs sold.

Finally, I could get my other motive fulfilled. It is to buy few copies of a book on blogging written in Tamil language. I just took a photo before I purchased that. The man at the counter took a look at the back cover of the book and at me and at the cover again when taking my payment. I got 10% discount for those copies also. I was never interested in reading but started to go through that book there itself. Usually when a book is written and published the author of that book will be given few free copies together with 10% royalty. When he runs out of the copies, he may order for more from the publisher or buy them from book stalls directly. I did the second thing. Yes, the book was written by me three years back and was published by Kannadasan Pathippagam.
