In the Raigad district of Maharashtra lies a strikingly beautiful place; Karnala. It is an apt place for bird lovers. Numerous birds are seen hovering all over the place. Karnala lies covered in dense forests and is fringed by the captivating mountain ranges. The vast stretches of greeneries and deciduous trees on all sides make it a perfect hamlet for the large number of bird species and wild animals. Nature lovers will simply be awe-struck at the natural splendour. Spending time in the lap of this nature will drive you away from the fever and fret of life, transporting you to a completely unknown world where only blissfulness dominates.

There are a number of places of tourist places of attraction among the most popular one’s are the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Karnala Fort, Bhavani Temple, Shiva Temple etc. The place has plethora of suitable place for adventurous sports like trekking and hiking.

The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is the abode of a large number of bird species. It is the perfect paradise for bird watchers. The bird sanctuary was established in the year 1968. Today it is the natural habitat for more than 150 species. Several species of migratory birds are also found here. One can get a glimpse of the spotted heart wood peckers, ashy minimet, paradise fly catcher, magpie robin, racket tailed drongo, myna, red vented bulbul, owl etc. It is a place that must be visited if you are at Karnala. From the summit of this bird sanctuary you can get an engaging view of the Mumbai coastline and the Sahyadri hills. During the monsoon climbing up the peak will be an enthralling experience.

There lies a beautiful specimen of the 13th century; Karnala Fort. The fort was presided by a large number of rulers like Angres, Mudhan and Peshwas. The fort has impressive and intricate carvings on the doorway. The lush greeneries on all sides are a great attraction for trekkers.

Perched on the peak of a hilly terrain is the Bhavani temple. The temple is enclosed by an ancient water tank, rock caves which were constructed by the Buddhists. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. The scenic background renders a magical charm rejuvenating the mind and soul of tourists. The temple provides an ambience of spirituality all around. Devotees are seen thronging the place during festivals or otherwise.  

There is also a Shiva Temple located at a close proximity to Karnala. It is believed to have been built by Manmuniraja of Shilahara dynasty in 1060 AD. The exterior and interior of the temple is jewelled by intricate carvings and sculptures. On the festival of Shivarathri devotees are seen visiting the temple. The Shiva Temple is built in the shape of a shivaling.

Karnala is a great tourist destination, apt especially for a short weekend and holiday.
