Zuleikha Chaudhuri Biography

Zuleikha Chaudhuri is a theatre director and lighting designer based on Mumbai and Delhi. She is married to Bollywood actor, Manish Choudhary known for supporting roles. They have collaborated together for several theater productions. She is the granddaughter of Ebrahim Alkazi, eminent Indian theatre director and former Director of National School of Drama, New Delhi. She is the daughter of Amal Allana, theatre director and former Chairperson of NSD. Zuleikha Chaudhuri received Sangeet Natak Academy, Yuva Puraskar in 2007 and Charles Wallace India Trust Award in 2002.

 

She completed graduation in Theatre Directing and Light Design from Bennington College in Vermont, USA in the year 1995. Though she was born in an artistic family with theatre personalities, contradictory to beliefs she was never brought up with stage rehearsals since childhood. As a child, she didn’t show interest to theater or watched plays. As a theatre director at present, her experiments with space and narrative widely informs her works. Her first major theatre production was an experimental project - ‘Roland Schimmelpfennig’s Arabian Night', in association with Khoj International Artists' Association. Her latest project is 'Seen at Secunderabad', in collaboration with Raqs Media Collective.

 

She describes her works as "an exploration of space and the role that space plays in the construction and experience of narratives”. She opened a production opened in Khoj Studios, New Delhi, in 2006. She continues the style of site-specific installation. In 2008, she presented 'On Seeing' at Khoj Studios, New Delhi. Set in three rooms at Khoj Studios, New Delhi, it requires audience to move with the actors to three stages/rooms. 'Propositions: On text and Space' is another experiment of Zuleikha.
