T. V. Sundaram Iyengar Biography

Thirukkurungudi Vengaram Sundram Iyengar Better known as TVS, was born on 22 March 1877 in Thirukkurungudi, Tirunelveli District, Madras Presidency, British India now Tamilnadu. His father wanted him to be a lawyer so he started his initial career as a lawyer but later moved to the Indian railways. 

TV Sundaram Iyengar is known as an Indian industrialist who pioneered the Indian automobile field and was the mind behind TVS Motors. Sundram Iyengar left his job and started a bus service in the city of Madurai in the year 1911. He established the T.V. Sundram Iyengar and Sons Limited in 1911 that operated a number of buses and Lorries under the title of Southern Roadways Limited. This was only the beginning of TVS Group.TVS Sundaram Iyengar went on to become one of the most successful industrialists of India. The Flagship Company of the group is TVS Motors.

The group established by Sundram Iyengar, according to the company, is currently the largest automobile distribution company in India, enjoys a turnover of about Rs. 4000 crore with employee strength of more than forty thousand. The TVS group works in the fields of automobile, its component manufacturing, dealership of auto companies, Insurance & finance and electronics and Information Technology.

He started many firsts in the erstwhile Madras Presidency including the transport industry and the state's first bus service. TVS had eight children, four of his five sons later joined the business and worked for the company. TV Sundaram Iyengar died on 28 April 1955 in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu but he will remain alive as TVS forever.
