Shanthamani Muddaiah Biography

Shanthamani Muddaiah is a sculptural artist from Mysore, Karnataka. She is also an installation artist who uses paper and charcoal to create, install and display exhibits. She has around 2 decades of experience in the field of art and she has participated in Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an international exhibition of contemporary art held in Kochi, Kerala in 2014, where her art piece, "Backbone" was displayed. "Metamorphosis Favourite" is yet another popular work made from charcoal of wood and pulp of cotton rags, and was well appreciated. She is a recipient of numerous honours and awards. She is a recipient of National Junior Fellowship from Ministry of Tourism and Culture, New Delhi for 2006 - 2008.

 

Shanthamani Muddaiah hails from Mysore, Karnataka. She was born in the year 1967. She completed a graduation course, BFA in Painting from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore. Later she completed her Master’s in Painting from M. S. University Baroda. Later she studied a one-year course in paper-making in 2004 in Scotland. The sculpture titled the "Backbone” xhibited at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2014 is considered a metaphor as the "backbone of our culture". Jitish Kallat was the curator of the show arranged in Kochi.

 

She conducted her first solo exhibition in 2007 at Chemould Presscott, Mumbai. It was an Exhibition of Painting and Body-cast titled “Silent Speak”. She later conducted solo exhibitions such as “Past continuous”, “Carbon Myths”, “Reflections” etc. "Frozen Phoenix", "Metamorphosis Favourite", "Silent Speak", "Gestures Speak" and "Turning wheel -Tradition unbound" are some of her noted works till now. Some of her sculptures have found permanent place in some Indian art galleries and museums. Sculpture, installation, video-art and photography are different forms with which she is associated with.
