Rekha Raju Biography

Rekha Raju is a trained classical dancer from Kerala. She performs in south Indian dance forms - Bharatnatyam and Mohiniyattam. Born as a Malayali in Palakkad, she is currently based in Bangalore, where she teaches students as well. She marked her stage debut (Arangettam) in 2003 at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore, and has been performing in India and abroad since the age of 4. She has also performed in many dance festivals across the country. She was given the title Swarna Mukhi by the Kalahalli Temple Trust. Natya Veda Award by Natraj Dance Academy and Yuva Kala Bharathi by Bharat Kalachar, both in 2013, Nrithya Rejini title by Kannur Arts Academy in 2011, Krishna Gana Sabha Endowment Award by Krishna Gana Sabha – 2016 etc are some of the honours received by her.

 

Rekha Raju hails from Kalpathi, Palakkad. She has been settled in Bangalore many years ago. In fact she was brought up in Bangalore, where she completed her education, and started her professional career too. As a performer on stage she began at the age of 4. She took formal education in south Indian dance forms from some of the leading gurus in Bangalore such as Kalamandalam Usha Datar, Raju Datar, Gopika Varma and Janardhanan. She completed degree in commerce and PG in Human Resource Management.

 

Since the age of 4, she has performed as a solo artist on stage. Currently she works as an assistant dance teacher at Bangalore Tamil Sangam. She also works as guest lecturer in educational institutions. She heads a dance institution named Nrithya Dhama, which trains students belonging to minority backgrounds. Konark Dance Festival, Poona Dance Festival, Kajuraho Dance Festival, Delhi International Festival etc are some of the cultural events in which she performed.
