Ramgopal Ghosh was a Bengali businessman, social reformer, orator and one of the leaders of the Young Bengal group who lived in the 19th century. He was born in the year 1815 and passed away on 15 January 1868. He is also known for his helps provided to John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune to establish girls’ school.

His father, Gobinda Chandra Ghosh had a small shop in Kolkata’s China Bazar. The family belonged to Hoogly. Ghosh was born in his maternal grandfather’s house. There are two opinions about his schooling and childhood. According to one opinion, he studied at Sherburne’s School where he learnt English. He studied at Hindu college later and monetary help was provided by Mr. Rogers of King Hamilton & Co. The second opinion is that Mr. Rogers got him admitted in Hindu College right from the beginning. But later he got attention of David Hare due to extra brilliance and got admission to prestigious Hare school, started by David.

In time he joined the class of Derozio where he got acquainted with Ramtanu Lahiri and the other Derozians. He was attracted by their ideas and started learning English philosophy and poetry from Derozio outside class hours. When Derozio established the Academic Association, he became one of its leading members. During their meetings, Ghosh gradually became fluent in English. He got encouragement from many leading personalities during this period.

Ghosh couldn’t finish his studies and on the recommendation of David Hare, he started working with a Jewish businessman named Joseph. Another businessman name Kelsall joined the firm and after a series of events it resulted in the establishment of R.G.Ghosh & Co in 1848. He is also known for his speeches and he wrote effectively as well.
