Ramesh Mehta Biography

Ramesh Mehta is a noted theatre personality associated with Hindi theater known as a playwright and play director. Started writing in the 1940s, he has staged numerous plays. Best among his plays include - Under Secretary, Dhai Akar Prem Ka, Dhong, Hamara Gaon, and Faisla which are regarded as the milestone plays in Hindi theater in the modern era. Under Secretary has been translated to many Indian languages and he has also staged three plays for children based on Panchatantra stories. He has been instrumental in initiating several theatrical clubs in many governmental departments and ministries of the government of India. He wrote Uljhan, the first Hindi play staged by the Indian Armed Forces.

 

Rameshwar Nath Mehta was born on 7 August 1923 in Jhang Maghiyana, Kashmir of present day Pakistan. After schooling in Kashmir, he graduated in Lahore and it was during that time when he developed interest in theatre. He moved to Delhi in 1942. Mehta joined Three Arts Club, one of the leading theatre productions then in 1947 or 1948, which functioned in Delhi and Shimla. His birth name was changed to Ramesh Mehta by its theatre director, Shibu Ghoshal at that time. Ghoshal first entrusted Metha with the job of prompting and Mehta later contributed to the troupe in the form of dialogues.

 

He made his acting debut as a stage actor in 1949 and almost at the same time he wrote his first play, India Today – when the troupe required some fresh play, instead of translations and mythology. The play was based on that particular period of India, followed by Dahej and Dasturi and since then he regularly wrote plays. Dasturi was his first published work, published under the name – Damad.  Slwoly he became the leading playwright of Three Arts Club and directed many plays as well. Chamanlal Memorial Award, Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sahitya Kala Parishad, the Delhi Award, the Delhi Natya Sangh Award etc some of the honours received by him.
