Padmini Chettur Biography

Padmini Chettur is an Indian contemporary dancer, who runs her own dance company, "Padmini Chettur Dance Company" based in Chennai. She is a student of famous dancer Chandralekha, niece of Vallabhbhai Patel. Padmini presented her first contemporary experiment in 1989, and since then has spent more than 3 decades in this field. She has been artist in residence in many foreign countries like England, apart from teaching students at her home country. She is also a co-founder of Chennai based Basement 21. She has also choreographed several fusion dance forms.

 

Padmini was born in Tamil Nadu in 1970. As a child she was introduced to classical dance form Bharathnatyam. It was the first dance form she learnt. After graduating from BITS Pilani in 1991, she slowly turned a full-time professional dancer. In fact she made her first performance as a contemporary dancer in 1989, while she was a student. After studies she joined dance troupe of Chandralekha in Chennai, and also remained her student. For the next 10 years she was associated with the same group. She has been a part of many famous productions of Chandralekha’s dance company during this period.

 

She presented her first solo work ‘Wings and Masks’ in 1999. Two years later she presented the second work - ‘Brown', the duet 'Unsung’, ‘Fragility’ and ‘Solo’ in three sections. Solo was presented in 2003. It was followed by ‘Paperdoll’. In 2006, her production - ‘Pushed’ was premiered at Seoul Performing Arts Festival. Thus she got opportunity to perform outside India for the first time. Since then she is regular with her shows in many parts of the world. Varnam in 2016 is her most recent choreographed work.
