P. M. Taj Biography

P. M. Taj was a noted actor and director associated with Malayalam theatre. He was also known as a creative writer and has scripted a few movies as well. He was a prominent cultural figure in Kozhikode. Though his life span was very short and he lived for only 34 years, he has given some outstanding contributions to Malayalam art, cinema and literature. He was a recipient of Sakthi Award, apart from Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award twice. Kanallattom, Perumkallan, Priyapetta Avivahidhan, Chakram, Aalmarattam, Ravvunni, Thalasthanathuninn Oru Vaarthayumilla, Ennum Ennum Priyapetta Amma, Kurukan Kunjaammante Vaal, Ambalakaalla, Kudukka Athava Vishakkunnavante Vedantam, Pavathan Nadu, Perumbara, Mary Lawrence, Uthram Thirunallinte Kalpana Pole, and Agraharam are among his noted theater plays.

 

His full name is Puthiyara Maliyakkal Taj. He was born in Kozhikode on January 3, 1956 in a middle class family. His father was a businessman and he had 3 siblings. His childhood and teens were spent in Kozhikode itself where he completed his education. He schooled at Sri Gujarathi Vidyala and later studied at Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College. Since school days he was active in cultural events and won many prizes. He was also active in student’s politics while at college and was associated with leftist movement. After college he worked for a brief period as an editor of leftist magazine – Yuvadhara.

 

His works are often influenced by folk tales and mythology. Perumbara was his first published playwright and it got published in 1977. Then till his death in 1990, he had a strong presence and influence in Kerala theater and has given some outstanding plays. He got married at the age of 30 and had two children. He passed away at the age of 34.
