Naval Tata Biography

Naval Tata was a businessman from Mumbai, who was a member of illustrious Tata industrialist family of India. He was an adopted son of Sir Ratanji Tata, a member of Tata group of industries. In fact he was a distant relative of Tata family. Thus famous industrialists and businessmen - Dorabji Tata and Ratan Tata are his uncles while the grandson of pioneer industrialist Jamsetji Tata. Many of his family members are directly linked with business. Ratan Tata – the most prominent member of Tata group is his son from first wife while Noel Tata from second wife, Simone Tata. He was a philanthropist, who co-founded Indian Cancer Society in 1951 with Dr. D. J. Jussawalla. He served as President of the Employers Federation of India for several years.

 

His full name is Naval Hormusji Tata. He was born in Bombay on 30 August 1904 to a middle-class Parsi family. His father was a Spinning Master at Ahmedabad. He lost his father when he was only 4. Later the family relocated to Navsari and lived a simple middle-class life. His mother did embroidery work to meet with the financial needs of the family. He was later boarded at J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage.

 

Ratanji Tata and his wife Navajbai Sett adopted him from orphanage and it changed the destiny of Naval. He was their distant relative, and they adopted him at the age of 13. Ratanji Tata didn’t have any other children. His foster father Ratanji Tata died on 5 September 1918 at St Ives in Cornwall, England aged only 47 and was buried by the side of his father at Brookwood Cemetery, Woking.

 

During his childhood days, following the unexpected death of his father, he experienced the pangs of poverty which he never forgot throughout his life. He married twice in his lifetime. He was first married to Soonoo and had two sons. One of them is Ratan Tata. The couple legally separated in mid-1940s and he later married Simone Tata in 1955. Famous businessman Noel Tata is their son.
