Narotam Sekhsaria Biography

Narotam Sekhsaria is a businessman and philanthropist from Gujarat. He is also an art collector. He was born into a business family and later he quit his family business, and joined hands with another businessman cum family friend Suresh Kumar Neotia to start Ambuja Cements private limited in 1983. Currently Ambuja Cements is one of the leading cement companies of the country. Sekhsaria has started an NGO, Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation which supports students for overseas education.

 

A first generation industrialist, Narotam Satyanarayan Sekhsaria was born into a business family in Gujarat. His family was into cotton trade business. He completed engineering from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Initially he joined family business, but later left it and founded Ambuja Cements along with his family friend Suresh Kumar Neotia. He was 33 years old when he decided to try his luck in cement sector. He started out by setting up a 7-lakh tonne per annum plant at Ambuja Nagar in Gujarat. Today, with a capacity of 12.5 million tonnes per annum, the company is country's lowest cost producer of cement.

 

Currently he is a board member of the company. At present Pulkit Sekhsaria, his son is the managing director of Gujarat Ambuja Cements. He has one daughter too, who is a social worker involved with NGOs. His name was placed at the 40th place by Forbes India in 2005 list with an estimated net worth of 590 million dollars. He served as the Chairman of 'Associated Cement Companies Ltd' (ACC Ltd). His path-breaking and innovative thinking created new benchmarks in Indian corporate sector. Known as a philanthropist he set up a family foundation that supports projects for capacity building in the areas of health, education and skill building.
