Mythili Prakash Biography

Mythili Prakash is an accomplished Bharatnatyam dancer from Tamil Nadu. She is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading young exponents of this classical dance form originated in Tamil Nadu. Mythili is the recipient of the “Devdasi National Award” in 2011. “Sanskriti Nrithya Puraskar” of Sanatan Sangeet Sanskriti Delhi and Chandrasekharan Endowment Concert at Music Academy Chennai are other major honours received by her. She is the daughter of Bharatanatyam exponent Viji Prakash. Critics appreciate her as “Suave and Contemporary… a happy blend of Western Stagecraft and Indian Aesthetics.”

 

She was born to Bharatanatyam exponent Viji Prakash. She has been a child prodigy who started formal training in classical dance forms at a younger age. Her association with Bharatnatyam began at the age of 8. She began her training in the Thanjavur tradition of Bharata Natyam and her mother was her first teacher. She graduated in mass communication from UC Berkeley. But later she dedicated her full time to Bharatnatyam. She choreographs both solo pieces and group performances. Stree Katha- the tragic heroines of the epic Ramayana is one of her highly acclaimed works. She has received grand for her acclaimed performances, Artistic Innovation Grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation and Creation to Performance Grant from the Irvine Dance Foundation to name a few.

 

She has performed on female characters - mythological, historical, social or contemporary characters to name a few.  Mythili Prakash is currently training under Malavika Sarukkai. She has also trained under Guru Kalyanasundaram and Guru Mahalingam Pillai. Mythili has toured internationally throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
