Joseph Allen Stein Biography 
Joseph Allen Stein was an American architect based in India. Before he moved to India in 1952, he established a regional modern architecture in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1940s and 1950s. It was a part of environmental design movement, which he was associated with, before he reached India. He has designed many important buildings of India in the post-independent period, and for his contributions towards Indian construction and architecture, he was honoured with Padma Shri by government of India in 1992. He passed away in 2001.
He designed many buildings in the capital city, Delhi – both for government and private authorities. Triveni Kala Sangam and Shridharani Art Gallery façade in New Delhi was designed Stein in 1963. India Habitat Centre (IHC), Lodhi Road, New Delhi, American Embassy School, New Delhi, Delhi Public School, Gurgaon, headquarters of the Ford Foundation, UNICEF and the World Wide Fund for Nature, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode campus, Kerala and Triveni Kala Sangam Arts centre, New Delhi are among his major works as an architect.
Joseph Allen Stein was born on 10 April 1912, in Omaha, Nebraska. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois, and later worked in some of the major cities such as New York and Los Angeles, before establishing his own practice in San Francisco. With the outbreak of the Korean war and the rise of McCarthyism in 1950, he decided to find a new place to explore his talents and finally reached India. He became head of the department of architecture at the Bengal Engineering College in Kolkata, and later he moved to Delhi, where he worked for many years. He also taught many students, who became established figures in the field of Indian architecture later.
