Jiddu Krishnamurti Biography

Jiddu Krishnamurti was a writer and speaker who was notable for his thoughts on meditation, human relationships and positive social change. He asserted that changes in the society can only emerge from the independent changes in the individual. He was born on 12th May 1895 in Telugu gamily in Madhanapally in Madras Presidency. He lived near the headquarters of Theosophical society at Adyar in Madras.

His father was Jiddu Narayanaiah and his mother was Sanjeevamma. His mother died when he was ten years old. His parents had eleven children and six of them survived among them. In 1903 his family moved to Cudappah. He was very sensitive in his younger days. His father Narayanaiah is a Theosophist since 1882 and he was hired by the Theosophical Society as a clerk and so he moved to Adyar in 1909.

Jiddu Krishnamurti met his influential Theosophist Charles Webster Leadbeater. He predicted that the young boy would become a great spiritual teacher and orator. Pupul Jayakar observed that there is an element of subservience and obedience in that boy. The Theosophical society undertook the task of educating him and he and his brother Nityananda were tutored at the society privately.

He established a strong connection with Annie Besant. He went to England in April 1911 and visited several European countries. He was provided lifetime annuity by her. He became ill when in France and it was during this time that he fell in love with Helen Knothe and soon they drifted apart.

He did not like the concept of spiritual leaders or godmen. He said that people must discover the causes of the problems directly. They must be ready to come forward to make a change. He was a voracious speaker and has authored several books, The First and Last Freedom, The Only Revolution, Krishnamurti’s Notebook to name a few.

He undertook many cultural tours and many schools were opened based on his ideas in India. He gave his last public talk in January 1986 before one month of his death in Ojai in California. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and died on 17th February 1986 at his home in Ojai in California.
