Himanshu Khagta Biography

Himanshu Khagta is an Indian professional photographer from Himachal Pradesh. His work is based in the Indian Himalayas, and is known for documenting life in mountainous areas of India. He is one of the most leading professional photographers of present-day generation. His works have been published in several leading publications including journals and magazines, in India and abroad. Life in Spiti and Life in Shimla chronicle his experiences in his hometown Shimla, and now he is planning to release two books, embedded with his photographs.

 

Himanshu Khagta was born on 29 June 1990 in Rohru, Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. His schooling was done in Shimla, while he pursued graduation from Chandigarh. He graduated in political science in 2011. He is a self-taught photographer, who enriched his knowledge through watching videos and studying tutorials. During his school days, he used to take photographs of Shimla and uploaded in Flicker. His works got noticed by some travel magazines, who offered him job as a photographer.

 

He extensively travelled across the world, and took photographs and worked as a freelancer during his college days. As a photographer, his first recognition came in 2008 when one of his works reached the final round of Smithsonian Magazine's 6th Annual Photo Contest, people category. In 2012 he joined Jaibir Singh Virk and Amit Chaudhary to set the Limca World Record for the longest Himalayan expedition on a tractor. Jaibir Singh Virk is a lawyer from Tohana town in Fatehabad, who completed a reverse drive journey of 273 km on a tractor to enter his name in Limca Book of World Records. Same year Khagta documented a project titled Great WASH Yatra.
