Christopher Charles Benninger Biography

Christopher Charles Benninger is an American-Indian architect and planner based in India. He designed Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad and College of Engineering Pune. Suzlon One Earth in Pune, Royal Supreme Court in Bhutan, YMCA International Camp, Nilshi, Center for Development Studies and Activities, the Mahindra United World College of India, the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, SOS Children's Villages in Kolkata, Kochi Refineries Headquarters, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta etc are other major works. This architect is best known for designing a cluster of academic and educational campuses in the mountainous region between Mumbai and Pune.

 

Christopher Charles Benninger was born in Hamilton, Ohio in 1942. He owns American-Indian citizenship. He grew up in Gainesville, Florida, where his father was a Professor at the University of Florida. Christopher completed his advanced studies in urban planning and architecture from Massachusetts and Harvard respectively. After completing his architecture studies from Graduate School of Design in 1969, he worked there as a teacher till 1972. Later he shifted to Ahmedabad as a Ford Foundation Advisor to the Ahmedabad Educational Society. Very soon he founded the School of Planning.

 

In 1976 he moved to Pune, and from there on he designed some of the educational institutions between Pune and Mumbai, when numerous educational institutions started flourishing in the post-independent period. He also founded the Center for Development Studies and Activities. He has remained as an advisory member in several educational planning boards. He is a Professor at the Centre for Environmental and Planning Technology University, Ahmedabad. He built a township for low income households at Yusafguda in Hyderabad in the second half of 1970s, which included more than 2000 homes, public amenities and shopping centres.
