Aseem Trivedi Biography

Aseem Trivedi is a controversial political cartoonist and activist from Kanpur, UP. His anti-corruption campaign ‘Cartoons Against Corruption’ made him a controversial figure nationwide in 2012. His cartoons have provoked many serious discussions in Indian parliament and he is known for criticizing Indian political system and corruption in a satire way through his cartoons, though a few those sketches are quite bold. He founded ‘Save Your Voice’ - a movement against internet censorship in India in 2012 aside his friend and journalist Alok Dixit. His website through which he uploaded cartoons was banned in 2011.

 

Trivedi was born on 17 February 1987 in Unnao, UP. He started his career as a freelance cartoonist and worked for many publications. In 2011, when Anna Hazare started anti-corruption movement against central government, Aseem also joined hands with them. As a part of campaign he started ‘Cartoons Against Corruption’ and launched a website criticizing the government and corruption. He displayed his cartoons in the MMRDA ground, Mumbai to support the team and very soon his website was blocked. Very soon he transferred his cartoons to his blog. The ban on the website initiated a hot debate over freedom of expression in India. Soon after the ban of his website, he started ‘Save Your Voice’ aside Alok Dixit. Both did a Freedom fast and they were hospitalized following the hunger strike.

 

His cartoons as a parody of National emblem and Parliament and a cartoon titled "Gang Rape of Mother India” created a lot of controversies. He also had to face serious allegations for insulting these Indian symbols. He was arrested in Mumbai on 9 September 2012 and alter bail was granted. He participated in Bigg Boss 6.
