Amritlal Hargovinddas Biography

Amritlal Hargovinddas, also referred to as Amritlal Hargovindas was an industrialist and philanthropist from Ahmedabad. He along with Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Ganesh Mavlankar started the Ahmadabad Education Society in 1936, which later became Gujarat University post Indian independence in 1950. A well-established mill owner of the country in the pre-independent period, he served as the president of the Ahmadabad Textile Mill Owners Association. He played a significant role in Gujarat’s education and establishment of educational institutions. As a philanthropist he has donated big sum of money for the establishment of colleges and universities, and also for charity purposes.

 

Amritlal Hargovinddas was born on 29 August 1889 in Gujarat. He completed graduation and LLB and started his professional career as a lawyer. His family was into money lending business and on the request of his father, he joined family business. As a successful businessman he became an industrialist and established his own textile business. This business magnet has served the elite positions of the president of the Ahmadabad Textile Mill Owners Association and chairman of Gujarat State Industrial Finance Corporation, apart from many other positions.

 

He joined hands with Kasturbhai Lalbhai, another businessman from textile industry and they together initiated many philanthropic activities. He also held close relationship with great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, K. M. Munshi etc and also released funds for good purposes. He also donated funds when drought and floods destroyed Gujarat in 1917 and 1927 respectively. One of the co-founders of Ahmadabad Education Society in 1936, he donated funds for the establishment of H. L. College of Commerce, Sheth Bansilal Amritlal College of Agriculture in Anand etc. He died in 1964.
