Tomato To India

We don’t need to introduce Tomato any one in India. Though there will no other vegetable at home, tomato has become a must in each and every house. It is unbelievable when we come to know that such an important tomato is not the vegetable of our country… isn’t it?? Many of us believe that the vegetable which is called as “Rama Munaka” in India is called as Tomato in English, but this is not correct. We are cultivating this tomato from getting them from other country.

Tomato is called as “Vilathi Baingan” and “Good Baingan” in Hindi, “vel vanki” in Marathi, “Tomatl” in Mexico, “Tomate” in Spanish and “Tomato” in English. Regarding the entry of Tomato in our country has different opinions. Some of them believe that in 16th century Tomato has come to India through Portuguese.  A British professor Mr Sir Jeorge Vaat has worked for Kolkatta University and has published a book called “A Dictionary of the Commercial Products of India” in 1889. In that book he says “In 1880,  Indians used to cultivated Tomato’s on to fulfill the necessities of the German visitors, but later Indians started showing interest on tomato’s. Bengali and Burma population started using tomato’s in there curries. So we don’t have any proof of Tomato entering into India in 16th century. And tomato was not known as the eatable vegetable in Europe. It was introduced by English people to India in the year 1850. May be that’s the reason that tomato is no where mentioned in Sanskrit and in the books of our ancestors.

When we discuss about tomato’s we have to know about “Small Tomato’s” or “Current Tomato’s”. The leaves of this small tomato trees are similar to “Pimpinella” tree, that’s why is has got this name. This vegetable has a very good colour and is sweet compared to other variety of tomatos. It is enriched with more C Vitamin when compared to normal tomato. Has they are very important; the plants will be grown in Green House. In star hotels they use this tomato as a decorative piece.

So the tomato what we eat daily, and is the compulsory vegetable for all the dishes is not our country vegetable. And it has a very big history also.
