Life And Death Of The Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Prime Minister of India in 1984 after the assassination of his mother and the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. He is the grandson of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. He did many beneficial reforms during his tenure and had to face the tragic death, exploded by a human bomb in Sriperumbudur on 21st May 1991 when campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections.

He continued his higher education in Trinity College in London and met his love Sonia there. She worked as a waitress in a restaurant and they married later on. He had two children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadora. He did not want to take part in politics and he stayed away from that and worked as a pilot. However he was forced to enter into politics when his brother Sanjay Gandhi died in 1980 in a plane crash.

In the general elections after the 1984, he was able to win with a great majority grabbing 411 seats out of 542. He had dreams of modern India and so modernized the telecom industry and ordered for compulsory and free education. He wanted to develop the science and technology and believed that this will change the economy of the nation. He reduced the quota system and taxes. Due to the relationship with USSR during the tenure of Indira Gandhi, the relationship with USA was strained and he took measures to improve it.

His name was mentioned in the Bofors scandal in 1987. This decreased his good name leading to the defeat of Congress in 1989 elections. Until his death, he continued to be the President of the Congress party. When he went to Sri Lanka in July 1989 to sign the Indo-Sri Lankan Peace Accord, he was attacked by a Sinhalese naval cadet on his head by a rifle. With a quick movement, he escaped the blow and the rifle brushed his shoulders.

He came to Sriperumbudur for the election campaign. It was a town in Tamil Nadu located 20 kilometers from Chennai. On 21st May 1991, a lady approached him and greeted him. She bent down and triggered the bomb that she had around her body. She had RDX explosives under her dress and this blasted with a big noise killing many people along with Rajiv Gandhi. A cameraman was filming the meeting of Rajiv Gandhi and this was caught in his camera. Though the man also died in the incident, his camera was intact and helped to trace the victims. As Rajiv faced the tragic death just like his mother Indira only after seven years of her death, Rajiv Gandhi photos and Rajiv Gandhi videos were seen everywhere paying homage to the martyr.

It was found out that the plan of his murder was executed by LTTE according to the orders of the LTTE leader Prabhakaran. India sent Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka and the atrocities done by these men in Tamil areas enraged the LTTE and they wanted to take revenge by murdering Rajiv Gandhi. After his death, Rajiv Gandhi was given the highest honor of India, Bharat Ratna award. His memorial was built in Sriperumbudur and the airport at Hyderabad was named after him.
