Very often parents complain about their kid that, though he/she is intelligent and can grasp things fast he/she never tries to open the book; he/she is not interested in studying. Such kids may score low marks in their exams too. It’s not due to ‘lazy’ factor many times; it may be a case of learning defects also.

If we take the list of 100 school kids, 10 may be suffering from such problems. It’s not because their IQ is low but due to such learning defects. Problems in hearing and vision or if he is suffering from depression, it may affect his studies a lot. He may loss concentration in studies. If reason of less interest in studies is none of the above, it may be the case of learning disability.

What is Learning disability?

Certain defects in learning and grasping things are together grouped under this category. If a kid finds difficult in reading, it’s known as ‘Dislexia’ in medical terms. If it’s the problem of writing, ‘Dysgraphia’ is the term used to refer it. ‘Discalculia’ is related to difficulties related to arithmetic calculations. Though such kids have good talents, they are slow in learning and studies. They make spelling mistakes common and may find difficulty in reading as well. If such conditions exist even after 7 years, you can assume that he has some learning defects.

Kids with Dislexia point their fingers in books while reading and take a lot of time in reading too. They may miss certain letters and may add letters of their own to complete sentences. Dysgraphia kids take a lot of time in writing and they may not complete their exams within the time allotted. Their handwriting is bad and they miss symbols while writing. They find it difficult to write in straight lines and reflective letters like ‘b’ and‘d’ too. Discalculia kids need hands to add numbers even when they reach 8. Multiplication table and calculations are difficult to them. They may write digits upside down and may wrongly quote answers after calculations. Certain functions in brain, genetic defects, malnutrition and infection during pregnancy are the reasons quoted.

What is its treatment?

After knowing history of his problems, physical and mental tests and taking reports from teachers as well as parents, doctors decide his treatment program. Tests are given for reading, writing and calculations and special counseling is given to parents as well. The education given to such kids is known as ‘remedial education’ and many teachers are employed in it.

But such kids have amazing talents as well. While normal kids learn through words and letters, such kids grasp things easily through pictures and images. They have good observation power and have a creative mind too.
