K.S. Chitra Has Won Maximum National Awards In Female Singing Category

K.S. Chitra is fondly known as the nightingale of south and she holds the unique record of maximum awards in playback singing female category, both Kerala state and National awards. Through this article I would like to briefly mention the songs and movies for which she was appreciated in National awards.

In many ways, her awards are unique. She has won National awards six times and its uniqueness is that she has won it for three distinct languages. She won it once for Hindi, twice for Malayalam and thrice for Tamil and most surprising is that she lost two hat-tricks during late 80’s as well as late 90’s. Though she is a Keralite and has debut singing field through Malayalam movies, her recognition in National awards for the first time was through a Tamil movie. For the movie Sindu bhairavi in 1986, she won it first for the song ‘Paadariye’. The song was purely composed on Indian classical music with minimum musical instruments. Suhasini, sync lipped that song and that movie gave her best actress award too, in National awards.

She won it again next year for Nakhashatangal, a Malayalam movie of M.T.Vasudevan, for the song ‘Mangal prasadam’. The movie was unique in many ways, and she won state awards too for the same song. She was almost on a hat-trick. But she lost it next year. One year later, she won it again for Malayalam song ‘Indu pushpam’ of Vaisali. The movie was based on the love between a courtesan and a saint, and how she brings him from forest to their kingdom to get rain. All the Ravi compositions sung by her were extra-ordinary and she won state awards for exactly the same song too.

Then she had to wait a little during 90’s to win her third National awards. Though the first two awards were purely for classical songs, third one was for a fast dance track pictured on Prabhu deva and Kajol. The movie was ‘Minsara kanavu’ and song was ‘Hoo la la’. When the movie was dubbed to Hindi, she sang its Hindi version too. She won it next year for Priyadarshan’s Hindi movie ‘Virsat’ and song was ‘Payali chun mun’ pictured on Tabu and Anil Kapoor. This movie was the remake of Kamal Hassan’s Tamil blockbuster Thevar Makan. Earlier she was criticized for wrong Hindi dictation used for playback singing. But this award was enough to keep all critics’ mouths shut. She won it for the last time for another Tamil movie. Cheran’s Autograph gave her a lovely song pictured on Sneha, ‘Oro pookkalumo’. This philosophical song was used as prayer song and introduced in books of Tamil syllabus that time.
