Construction Of A Harbor

Port and fisheries sub division, Udupi is in charge of constructing a Jetty in Baputhota, near the Malpe harbor in Malpe. Already there are provisions existing for the docking of 400 boats in the present harbor but there has been a steep increase in the number of boats used for fishing and other purposes in Malpe and currently there are around 1400 boats which need to be docked but due to lack of space a new Jetty made mostly with cement and concrete is being built.

This new jetty comes under the 3rd stage of construction. After the end of the first two stages there was a standard evaluation committee formed in 2007 who decided that there has to be a new jetty made. The project report was prepared by Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF), Bangalore and submitted to the Central Government who sanctioned 75% of the total budget of rupees 3175.00 Lakhs for the project.  Part A of the project consists of the construction of an RCC Diaphragm wall jetty with a length of 786.5 m and a 351 m pile jetty along with a concrete surface, a new outfitting quay for small boats, a restaurant, an electricity substation and a radio communication tower.

Part B of the project includes repair of old quay and jetties built in the first two stages and the repair of Fish landing department. The section officer who oversees the construction, Mr. Jagadish bhatt said, “There are so many advantages from this but only a few negligible disadvantages like leakage of oil but we have taken measures to combat the problem by using affluent treatment plants for waste. And we have also received the environmental clearance for this project.”

The construction originally started in July 2011 and is expected to be over by July of 2014. Already construction worth 11 crores is over. The main chief for this project is T.S. Rathod who is the executive engineer in the Port and Fisheries Sub division. This project deeply affects the people living in and around the area. After the completion it would help in reducing the congestion that is currently affecting the harbors in Malpe which would in turn help the fishermen of Malpe. It would also provide more places for the fish which have been caught already. As the section officer said there are hardly any disadvantages so it would greatly benefit a lot of people. After this a fourth stage of construction for another jetty has been proposed as there will, in future, be a huge increase in the number of boats like Deep water fishing boats.
