Nowadays leading heroes have taken the role of comedians too. Yet we can’t deny the fact that, comedians to do hold a special space in Indian cinema. From Charlie Chaplin to Mr.Bean, Hollywood has also entertained the crowds with crackers of comedies. Then why should Indian cinema keep away from it? If we take the history of Indian cinema, certain comedians have played a significant role as supporting actors to make many heroes ‘Stars’. Through this column I would like to mention the names of a few comedians who have attributed a lot to Malayalam cinema. Let us begin from Black and White era of Malayalam movies.

The first person who comes to my mind is ‘Adoor Bhasi’. This comedian has played a significant role in old Malayalam movies to curve the career of many leading stars. In fact he has played a pivot role in moving the script forward. It was a time when certain film directors can’t even imagine a movie without Adoor Bhasi. No doubt, he stays at the top of comedians list and has served as a role model for many comedians to come. His dictation, mannerisms and dialogue delivery in comic style have made laugh crowd a lot. Now let me take the name of two more great comedians of old movies – Bahadur and S.P.Pillai. Bahadur looks very similar in appearance and mannerisms to Tamil comedian Nagesh. In many movies, Bahadur and S.P.Pillai have appeared too.

Now let us move to present times. If someone asks who the king of comedy of Malayalam cinema is, it’s none other than Jagathi Sree Kumar. He has given a new definition to comedy nourishing Malayalam cinema in the past 25 years and no doubt, this versatile actor can be considered as one among the best 5 comedians Indian celluloid has ever witnessed. People take his name with honour and whole industry takes his name with respect. Many people even think that without Jagathy's name Malayalam film industry has nothing to entertain and can't imagine a film world without him. He has placed a significant role in Mohan Lal’s career to place him a superstar. Comedians like Prem Kumar and Indrans also need special mention.

Now let me take Innocent’s name. After Jagathi, the most popular comedian is Innocent. It’s due to his talents and contributions to Malayalam cinema that people take his name with respect. Comedian of present time is Suraj Venjaramoodu. He is the comedian of present times, and has a distinct style to make you laugh. No doubt, the throne of Jagathi Sree Kumar and Innocent – the emperors of Malayalam comedy is now left open for this actor. Though he may not able to attain the stardom and respect of both these actors, he has his own signature in the present days of Malayalam cinema.
