As Your Habits Are, So Are You

In every sphere of human life whether it pertains to fostering good or evil or to character formation it is the habit vis-à-vis thoughts, emotions and deeds that plays a decisive role. Irrespective of whether an activity is good or evil, it will pervade our mind and nervous system and hold them in a tight grip if that activity is done repeatedly. This is how a habit is formed. Whenever occasion demands it will manifest itself just like a reflex-action.

Once a retired soldier was walking on the road carrying some foodstuff in a basket on his head. A mischievous boy had seen the soldier passing by that spot on many occasions. One day the soldier was walking alng the roadside immersed in thought. Determined to play a practical joke on the soldier, the boy shouted ‘attention’. No sooner had the soldier heard the command, than he lowered the hands supporting the basket and was about to give a salute in the ‘attention’ position. As an inevitable result, the basket fell into the gutter spilling the foodstuff all over the spot. By the time the soldier realized the mischief played by the boy it was too late. The reason for all this was that he acted instantaneously as he had been accustomed to the military drill for too long. We do not usually realize that habits can hold the individual in an iron fist. They do not normally let us disentangle ourselves from a disgusting and difficult situation or surroundings. We subconsciously make a habit of sticking to the same spot or surroundings. Observe those who are in the habit of smoking immediately after the bed coffee or breakfast. If per chance there are no cigarettes left in their pockets they will feel so ill at ease that they will rather walk a long distance to reach the cigarette shop and get the badly needed cigarettes than do without them. This should not be taken to mean that all habits are bad. But one striking feature of all habits is that they hold the individual under their thumb. All our achievements and accomplishments, our thoughts and traits, interests and aptitudes, likes and dislikes, anger and arrogance, self-respect and self-aggrandizement, taunts and teasing, inclinations and impressions, dacoities and deceits are what we have acquired and absorbed directly or indirectly from our surroundings and have cherished and made a habit of. That it is very difficult to wipe out or to get rid of a deep-rooted habit is more than proved by the illustrative epigram-habits die hard.

Thus, if we wipe out the letter ‘h’ from the word ‘habit’, ‘abit’ will still remain and if we erase the letter ‘a’ also, ‘bit’ remains and even if we obliterate the letter ‘b’, ‘ it’ still remains. This symbolizes that habit leaves an almost indelible impression on our mind.
