Nagpur is situated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This is the third largest city in Maharashtra and the winter capital of the state. As there are many orange orchards here it is also called as Orange City. The River Nag flows through this region and so the city was named as Nagpur. The city of Nagpur was founded in 1702 AD. But the researches show that the human existence in this place started in 8th century B. C. The king Vindhyasakti of Vakata dynasty ruled over Nagpur in third century. After that Badami Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Yadavas ruled over this place. The Mughal Empire conquered the place in 17th century. Prince Bakht Buland founded Nagpur and later Chand Sultan made Nagpur his capital and fortified it.

 

The Maratha rulers came to power after 1743 and then Bhonsle dynasty ruled over this place. Raghoji, Raghoji II, Mudhoji and Raghoji III ruled over this place and after the death of Raghoji III in 1853 it came under the direct control of British. The Nagpur Province was established with Nagpur as its capital.

 

The Congress session of 1920 was held in Nagpur. There was a Hindu-Muslim riot in 1923 in the city. When India got its independence in 1947, the state of Madhya Pradesh was formed with Nagpur as its capital. When the states were reorganized in 1956, it was changed to Bombay state and this again underwent a split in 1960 as Maharashtra and Gujarat. It celebrated the completion of 300 years of its establishment in 2002.

Nagpur is situated in the Deccan Plateau region at an elevation of 310 meters above mean sea level. The area of the metro city is 1,520 square kilometers. It comes under the flood plains of the Kanhan River and has alluvial soil and metamorphic rocks.

 

Nagpur has tropical wet and dry climate with an annual rainfall of 47.44 inches. It receives its rainfall during its monsoon season lasting from June to September.
