Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is the center of attraction of Tirupati and is situated on the Tirumala hills. The hill has seven peaks that are supposed to represent the seven heads of Adisesha. The important deity is Lord Venkateswara and he has other names such as Balaji, Govinda and Srinivasa. The temple is situated on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini, the holy water tank.

This is the richest pilgrimage center in India after the Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This is also the most visited place of worship in the world that nearly about 30 to 40 million people visit every year.

The temple has a long history and when the state of Andhra Pradesh was created, Tirupati became a part of it. The temple is maintained by a board of trustees and the temple organization runs various charitable trusts, schools, colleges and hospitals. The roof of the primary deity is made of gold called Ananda Nilaya Divya Vimara. The Lord wears the crown made of gold that is studded with emerald and diamond. Many gold ornaments are worn on it that include gold belt, gold bells, gold anklet, gold string and gold frames.

The deities in the temple are Moolavirat, Kautuka Beram, Snapana Beram, Utsava Beram and Bali Beram. The worship is done six times a day. Laddu is given as the prasadam. Hair tonsuring by the devotees is an important ceremony at Tirupati. Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Rama Navami and Janmashtami are some of the festivals celebrated here with great splendor.
