Lying at the confluence of the North Eastern Himalayas and the Dooars region of West Bengal an excursion to Siliguri will acquaint you with a number of wildlife sanctuaries, heritage places, sprawling hills and scenic beauty of immense richness and variety.  Ranked second in the list of the important cities in West Bengal, Siliguri lies at a distance of 600 Km from Kolkata and is the gateway to other hill stations like Darjeeling, Gangtok, Mirik, Kalimpong and Kurseong. It is widely a commercial centre of West Bengal.  Though Siliguri cannot claim to have a multitude of tourist attractions like Darjeeling or Kalimpong yet there are few places of attractions here that are worth visiting. The vicinity offers some exceptional view of the mountain ranges that lies under blanket of snow.

The climatic condition of Siliguri is favourable for the flourishing of tea plants. Tea brands of numerous qualities are cultivated here. It is home to a number of military and Indian forces like the Shashatra Seema Bal, the Assam Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Border Security Force. Transported items, handicrafts and other local handicraft items are available in great variety and at a much cheaper rate.

Some tourist places of attractions are the pilgrimage sites like Kali Mandir and ISKCON temple, Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Science City, Mirik, Monasteries, Kalijhora, Coochbehar etc.

Situated at a close quarter to Sevoke, the Kali Mandir is the abode of the Goddess Kali. It is an important temple for the Hindus and large numbers of devotee from far and near are seen flocking to the temple. The newlyweds are the most frequent among all visitors. They come here to seek the blessings of Goddess Kali in this temple. ISKCON is dedicated to Lord Krishna is estimated to be one of the biggest Krishna centre in the North Eastern region. The building stands as a perfect amalgamation of modern architectural style and ancient Indian conventions. At a distance of 124kms away from Siliguri lies the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuaryn which is home to the one-horned rhino and many other rare species of birds and animals. Siliguri has a well equipped science museum which also has within its complex a planetarium and Nature Interpretation Centre. This science city is frequented by a large number of tourists from all over for various educational purposes. Mirik a picturesque hill station is a half an hour ride from Siliguri. The Sumendu Lake forms the core of this hill station heightening the beauty of the place in all its natural splendour. Along the river Teesta lies Kalijhora a scenic spot much visited by all those touring Siliguri.

Other places of notice are Coochbehar and several small monasteries that siliguri boast of. A visit to the place will surely enlighten you of the city’s rich and natural resource.
