Viceregal Lodge is also called as Rashtrapati Niwas and is located on the Observatory Hills of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. This is one of the beautiful buildings of Shimla and has many photographs of British era.

Viceregal Lodge was established in Jacobethan style by the British architect Henry Irwin. The work started in 1880 and was completed in 1888 during the time of Lord Dufferin.

It has a grand staircase in the hall that spirals up to three floors. There is a big fireplace facing the main entrance. The galleries are paneled with teak and it has an indoor tennis court. It has huge kitchens, an enormous wine cellar and boilers for central heating.

After the independence of India, Viceregal Lodge remained the summer retreat of the Indian President. However in 1960s, Dr. S. Radhakrishnana made it a place of scholars and the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies was moved into that in 1964.
