Mukurthi National Park spreads over an area of 78.46 square kilometers in the western part of Nirgiri ranges. This is a Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve area. It was originally called Nilgiri Tahr National Park.

 

The climate of this region ranges between 0 degree Celsius to 20 degree Celsius and the region has various species of flora like rhododendrons, black berries and raspberries. The place also consists of lichens, ferns and bryophytes.

 

The animals found in the Mukurthi National Park are jungle cat, barking deer, Nilgiri Tahr Sambar, Wilddogs, stripe necked mangoose, otters, giant squirrels, Nilgiri martin and the bird varieties such as kestrel, black eagles, grey jungle fowls and thrushes.

 

 

Mukurthi National Park is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Department of Forestry. Commercial tour operation is not permitted here and special permission is needed to enter the region.
